What to Do if Your Pet Has Respiratory Distress

When you own a pet, it’s important to know what to do in case of an emergency. Respiratory distress is a symptom of a severe medical emergency and requires immediate attention. If your pet is struggling to breathe, every second counts. You are more likely to stay calm in this situation if you prepare for what to do ahead of time. Take a look at what to do if your pet is in respiratory distress.

Be Prepared & Stay Calm

Staying calm can help you keep a level head and get your pet the lifesaving medical care he needs. If you are stressed out, your pet will pick up on it and it may make their breathing worse. If your pet is struggling to breathe, call the closest veterinary hospital and let them know that you’re on your way. Do not attempt CPR unless it is recommended by your veterinary provider, who may walk you through the appropriate steps over the phone. Chances are, however, they will simply recommend getting to the emergency animal hospital as soon as possible to seek lifesaving care from professional veterinary specialists.

Check Your Pet’s Symptoms

Look out for specific symptoms of respiratory distress, including noisy or fast breathing; white, blue, or gray gums; stretching and elongating themselves to try to breathe more easily; opening their mouths and/or panting to try to breathe.

Look for an Obstruction

If possible, try to see if your pet is choking on something. If you can check without distressing your pet further, look for signs of something stuck in their mouth or throat that you can remove. Never use a secondary object to try to get something out of your pet’s throat or mouth, as that might end up pushing it in further.

If your pet is having trouble breathing, has stopped breathing, has lost consciousness, or has white, gray, or blue gums, you should take him to the emergency veterinarian as quickly as possible.
