Between the noise outside, the doorbell ringing, and the coming and going of party guests or Trick-or-Treaters, Halloween can be a stressful time for pets. On top of that, some Halloween treats and decorations can be fatal or cause injury to your pets. Be aware of these Halloween hazards when planning your Halloween events:
Dangerous Decorations
Certain Halloween decorations can pose a risk to pets when ingested and can even be fatal. Rubber decorations like bats, skeletons, and eyeballs may look like toys to your pet, but can cause choking or intestinal blockage if eaten. Glow sticks and fake blood contain chemicals that can be fatal to pets, and fake cobwebs, strings of lights, and draped fabric can be a choking hazard as well. Lit candles can pose a fire hazard, as they can easily be overturned by curious pets.
Halloween Candy and Treats
Chocolate is fatal to pets, as are treats and candy that contain artificial sweeteners like Xylitol. Don’t let your pet consume anything containing nuts, excessive sugar or fats, oil, raisins, or marshmallows. You also should not let your pet consume any amount of alcohol, as it can cause seizures, brain damage, coma, or death.
Trash and Packaging
Trash and packaging from Halloween candy and decorations can be dangerous to your pet if ingested. Your pet may think empty plastic wrappers and string are toys, but they can become a choking hazard, cause an intestinal blockage, and even lead to internal bleeding if your pet consumes them.
Noises and Open Doors
If you have Trick-or-Treaters or are having a Halloween party, the noise might be startling to your pet. If your door is opened over and over, your pet may bolt in fear. Try to keep doors closed or keep your pet in another room if you’re having guests.
If your pet has encountered any of the scary hazards mentioned above, visit your local 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic as soon as possible.
