Your home should feel safe and secure–but for small children and pets, there could be danger lurking in seemingly ordinary places. We’ve assembled our top tips for making your home as safe as possible for everyone who lives in it, whether that’s a toddler, a dog, or both.
Clean Up Slippery Spills ASAP
Kids and pets alike are curious creatures, so a spill on the kitchen or bathroom floor can quickly become a slippery or even toxic situation if not cleaned up right away. If you don’t have time to get to the spill quickly, block off the area or keep kids and pets in another room until the situation can be resolved.
Keep Dangerous Items Out of Reach
Electrical wires, cleaning products, batteries, and other small objects can pose a choking hazard for kids or pets. Make sure to store these items in secure locations that are out of reach of little ones or four-legged friends.
Secure Windows and Balconies
Young children can easily climb furniture near windows, so it’s important to ensure your window locks are working properly and to keep furniture away from windows so kids won’t be tempted to climb. If you have balconies, take steps to secure them with childproof railings or enclosures.
Block Off Unsafe Areas
If your pet is constantly getting into the trash while you’re gone and eating things that can make them sick, consider blocking off the trash can with a gate or using a pet-safe trash can. You should also block off any room that could pose a risk to small children, such as balconies and laundry rooms.
If your pet has gotten injured, contact your veterinarian right away. Your veterinarian can help you determine what needs to be done and provide emergency care if necessary. They can also provide tips for making your home safer.
